Candy from Tokyo

From the Candy runway show in Shibuya, Tokyo come this really great camo coat. I enjoy the closed collar and the fact that it's in grayscale. The show also featured some great masks. Check it all out HERE on TokyoDandy.

Brut Clothing

Brut has a very cool lookbook and website that features their love of "raw" and strong materials. Brut takes vintage pieces and give them new life, which I think is a commendable project in today's fast-fashion marketplace. I enjoy the vintage military pieces and accessories assembled. See more of the Brut project HERE.

Some Favorites from Spring/Summer 2014: Thom Browne and Givenchy

Some favorites from the Spring/Summer collections:

I’ve delayed commenting on both the Spring/Summer 2014 collections from Thom Browne and Givenchy mainly because it took some time for me to sort out just what I thought. I knew that both collections struck a chord, but I wasn’t sure how or why they resonated; I keep looking at both collections and have yet to grow tired.

With Browne’s collection, I believe it must be the sense of strength of the pieces, which take so many militaristic references and twist them, when juxtaposed to a high gloss presentation of face that grabs my attention—it’s like Robert Palmer Girl-meets Grace Jones-meets Michael Jackson. This character is simply one I cannot shake, it’s so strong. Several of the pieces themselves aren’t very functional, like the strange crotch additions and the oversized coats, but many more can be incorporated as statement pieces. But, again, it’s the styling and aggressiveness of the pieces that I can’t keep from being drawn to. See more HERE.

In regards to Givenchy, the tribal influence that is crossed with digital, and even analog, technological inspired prints, which also have insect-like forms, keep me thinking. The pieces read future, retro, and ancient all at the same time, and that’s an intriguing idea in regards to clothes to be worn by today’s younger men. I’m also usually partial to face painting, and the make-up on the models captures tribal-meets-digital very nicely. See more HERE

Dior Homme Fall/Winter 2013

Slick. Future. Dior Homme F/W 2013 keeps it simple and slightly militaristic with creative director Kris Van Assche. I enjoy the use of the belt to accentuate the waist; and of course I like the metallic glimmer. Very interesting graphics, too, on several of the pieces. See more HERE on Fashionisto.

Givenchy Fall/Winter 2013

I am enjoying the metal plates placed over the shoes for the Givenchy Fall/Winter 2013 collection runway show. It's also cool how they have placed photos taken by Robert Mapplethorpe onto many of the pieces. Definitely a military/uniform vibe going on, and I like it; I'll join the Mapplethorpe army any day.

"Parure" by Alice Rosati--Citizen K

I'm a fan of regalia and it is being served up big time--all about the jewels--in this shot entitled "Parure" from Alice Rosati for Citizen K International. I'm enjoying these two looks that offer ostentatious strength. Styled by Jerome André. See more HERE on before you kill us all

Big Bang--"Monster"

I must admit, I am not into K-pop by any measure. However, this is about the fashion, right? Of course. And I am really enjoying what is going on in this video for BigBang's "Monster." Some inventive hair and make-up as well outlandish wardrobes. I mean, how can you resist a cape? So, while the music may not be everyone's cuppa--though we are said to be on the verge of a K-pop take over!--the K-pop fashion and styling is cool to behold.

Embellished Rebellion in Hero Mag

I'm enjoying the embroidered detail--with an Asian flare to it (as seen in maybe a Chinese military design)--seen here on the jacket photographed by Dennis Schoenberg for the latest issue of Hero magazine. There's somewhat of a regal rebellion felt with this look. See more of the shoot Here on Morphosis.

Something from Lookbook, dec '11

I'm enjoying the look by Alexander here: the boots, bag, and the military jacket especially. The jacket is nice because it is without so much of the adornment that so many military influenced jackets display these days--keep it simple.

Military simplicity in Fantasticsmag

I do enjoy a military inspired silhouette as seen with this look styled by Ryan Catney and photographed by Joel Esposito for Fantisticsmag. See more HERE.

Daniele Alessandrini S/S 2011

Daniele Alessandrini offers several degrees of collections, but the one I enjoy the most--due to what I think is great styling--is the Homme collection. Casual and street-wear looks done very nicely. You can see more of the Homme collection HERE on Morphosis and see two more 2011 collections from Alessandrini HERE on his site.

Josephus Thimister

Josephus Thimister delivers a message about war in his latest collection. Out of the jumpsuits and onto the runway--I'm really enjoying this take on militarianism. The jackets are outrageous, love the tattered knit sweater--All the looks call you to attention. See more HERE on Morphosis

Phenomenon 2010 A/W Collection--Japan

Phenomenon is a brand out of Harajuku, Tokyo. Their focus is on streetwear and this collection has a samurai--traditional--spin to it. The samurai look can be spotted in the jackets and coats in particular. These three I enjoy most in the collection. Phenomenon is somewhat of a "insiders" outfit, making it hard to find any info on the brand or its shop in Harajuku. However, you can see the pics from Phenomenon's debut at the 10th annual Japan Fashion Week HERE--and read a bit more about the company.

Nicky Emmerson-Photographer-in Wound

This is a great spread I am just seeing by Nicky Emmerson for Wound magazine. The looks are posh--a young gentleman home alone in the manor. A bit of a military school touch in the first look--with the added studded suspenders--carried over into the second look with the boots and pants. Nice quiff too.  See all the looks HERE

Patrik Ervell

Patrik Ervell offers what I like: cool simplicity. The looks below also feature another of my favorite archetypes--military--with cadet jackets and sweater. Also this great black sweater and the cream colored snap sweater.  The suit is a basic jacket and pant, but check out the latex scarf. Ervell's site is truly informative and a treat to navigate and shop. Very nice website. Check it out. There is also a nice piece on the designer from New York Times T Magazine.
